Bishop Sullivan Catholic High is proud to have a comprehensive, peer led retreat program. Each student has the opportunity to go on retreat each year they are enrolled.
Our freshmen go on the Genesis (in the beginning) retreat. This retreat is held in the first weeks of the school year and it is daylong. The purpose of this retreat is to introduce students to the values of our community while giving them a chance to get to know one another. Senior peers create this retreat each year and facilitate it.
The Sophomores attend the Koinos (community) retreat. It is a daylong retreat held at local parishes. Under the guidance of Senior Peer Leaders, the sophomores delve into scripture on this day looking for points of connection with their lives as they also build community.
The Kairos (God’s time) retreat for the juniors is the longest retreat the students will attend. It is roughly 40 hours in length. On this retreat the students explore themselves, their relationship with God and the importance of ministry to the community. It is modeled on the Cursillo retreat for adults. The administration considers it so important, that it is a requirement for graduation.
Seniors attend Kronos (time) in the Fall and a day of recollection in the Spring. Kronos is designed by Senior Peers after they go through a process of discerning the needs of the graduating class. Although the design and theme change from year to year, seniors are typically very cognizant of the “time” they are in. The retreat is a reminder to make the most of it.
The peers who lead these retreats give a great deal of their time and effort to this ministry. They attend a training retreat in the summer and then work on these retreats throughout the year. This work involves organizational pieces but also skills building in the area of group leadership and dynamics. The students do not receive service hours for this ministry – it is truly from the heart.
Because we think it is important for the significant adults in the student’s lives to model the behavior we want to develop, we offer a twilight retreat for the parents as well as retreats for the faculty.
