Humbert "Rocky" Versace, Crusader Class of 1955, served as an U.S. Army captain and intelligence adviser in Vietnam. He was wounded in an ambush with two other members of a Special Forces team and taken prisoner by the Viet Cong in 1963. While in captivity for 23 months, Rocky continuously challenged his captors, demanded better treatment for his men, and sang patriotic songs to uplift his men regardless of his punishment. Rocky Versace was executed in 1965 but there is no indication that he ever succumbed to propagandist indoctrination. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions as a POW.
Today, Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School honors one of her Crusaders with two large display cases dedicated to Rocky Versace and through a memorial scholarship. The Rocky Versace Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Rocky Versace, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Vietnam Veteran POW, and 1955 graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School (now currently, Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School). Awarded to a current Bishop Sullivan CHS student with an active military parent, the criteria for this award include scholarship, service and need.
