Bishop Sullivan CHS won the Blue Crab Bowl on Saturday, February
23rd! It
was an exciting competition in which we beat the three-time champion Chesapeake
Bay Governor's School twice and our nemesis, the fine team from Grafton
High School twice as well, in the finals. We were third last year,
and last won in 2001.
Our first-place team is composed of Will Hoey, Roger Chesley, Alex Ratte', Mike Stolz, and Christine Chesley. They were awesome. Each played an important role, but Christine had two clutch answers in the toss up during the finals that keep us in the game, taking a risk with an educated guess.
Just as impressive was the performance of our "B" team. Due
to bad weather in the western part of the state, two teams were unable
to travel, and our four alternates were asked to fill in one of those spots. Carol
Stapanowich stepped up to coach the "B" team and they played
great! Although they lost all the round robin rounds in the morning
(by close scores), and were placed in the B bracket for the elimination
rounds (one loss and you are out), they started winning and won three straight. They
did not lose again until they came up against the Chesapeake Bay Governor's
School which our "A" team had just beat and knocked into the
lower bracket. They lost to them by only 6 points. These kids
finished fifth, just out of the medal rounds! The "B" team
was composed of Alex Litwack, Jimmy Lee, Nathan Taylor and Mary Chang.
Please take a moment to congratulate these students if you see them. And wish us luck in Alaska in late April when we compete in the National Ocean Science Bowl.
