Office 2007 and Home to School
File Compatibility

Over the past summer, the Technology Department at Bishop Sullivan CHS completed a major upgrade to our computer network as well as upgrades to most of the more than 160 computers in the school.

One of the changes was installation of Office 2007 on all machines.  To help students become familiar with the new software, we have installed interactive references for the Office 2007 programs on all school computers.

However, while files created in Office 2007 are an advance over earlier formats, they are also not backwards compatible with earlier versions.

What does this mean for students and parents?

First, we have asked our teachers to save files that will be accessed by students at home ( from their teacher's webpage) in Word 2003/earlier format.

Second, we have instructed students to save files they need to transport from school to home in Word 2003/earlier format.

Finally, if your Windows home computer has an earlier version of MS Office, Microsoft has created a file converter that you can download and install. It is a simple process and the converter works well.

If you have a Mac computer with Office 2004 and the most recent OS, Microsoft has a beta version converter that you can download and install that will work for Word 2007 and PPt 2007 files. We have no experience with how well this converter works.
