The Mission of Catholic High School is to provide a college preparatory education which nurtures the intellect, shapes character, and forms Christian values. Catholic High School is a community which reveals God’s presence in the world by affirming the Gospel message and challenging, when necessary, the views of a secular society.

  • School and Community

    Catholic High School was originally established under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond as Norfolk Catholic High School in 1949. In 1993, the school relocated to Virginia Beach and opened as Catholic High School. Catholic High School is dedicated to nurturing the intellect, shaping character and forming Christian values. The student body is composed of young men and women from varied socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Students represent the major cities of southside Hampton Roads—Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Suffolk.
  • Faculty and Students

    In 2018-19, the faculty totals 41 instructors and administrators; 25 have advanced degrees. The student body of 448 includes 122 seniors.
  • School Year and Student Requirements

    The academic year is divided into two semesters, totaling 180 days. Midterm exams are held in January. The schedule consists of seven academic periods each day. Each student is required to take six classes per semester, one of which must be theology. The entire curriculum is rigorous and complex, in preparation for college entrance.
  • Graduation Requirements

    Graduation Credit Requirements:  A minimum of 24 credits in grades 9 – 12 is required for graduation.  Students are also expected to complete a community service requirement for graduation. We encourage students to take four credits in Math, Science and Foreign Language. In the Class of 2019, 108 seniors are enrolled in math and 114 are enrolled in science; 67 will have completed foreign language through the fourth year.

  • Grade Point Average and Weighted Courses

    Through the class of 2021, a student's GPA is determined by using a 4.3 (A+) system with additional weighting of .0208 per semester for accelerated and honors courses; Advanced Placement courses are weighted .03 per semester.

    Starting with the Class of 2022, GPA is determined using a 4.3 (A+) system for regular courses,  a 4.8 (A+) system for weighting Honors courses and a 5.3 (A+) system for weighting AP courses.(see grading scale section, below)

    All courses are included in the calculation of the GPA. AP and Honors courses are indicated on the transcript with an asterisk (*). All students in Advanced Placement and Honors courses are selected based on a competitive process that includes examinations, recommendations and standardized test scores. Students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP exams.

  • Advanced Placement Results

    In May 2018, 167 students at Catholic High School took 466 AP exams in 22 different subjects. Seventy-five percent (75%) of students scored 3 or higher on at least one exam, and 60% of all AP exams taken resulted in scores of 3, 4, or 5.

    Approximately 90% of the 2018 graduates attend four-year colleges. Nine percent attend two-year colleges.
  • Class Rank

    Because of the small class size and the college bound nature of the students, Bishop Sullivan CHS does not compute class rank. A grade distribution chart is provided.
  • School Accreditation

    The school is accredited by AdvancED/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and the Virginia Catholic Education Association (VCEA).
