Alumni Relations Coordinator

In the 1960s, basketball was the only sport available to young women at Norfolk Catholic High School, and after 59 years we recognize Jacqueline Gearheart Hutcheson ’62 for her athletic accomplishment.

Jackie began playing basketball at Sacred Heart School in 6th grade. She continued her basketball career playing the forward position at Norfolk Catholic High School as a member of the 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1962 Varsity Girls’ Basketball teams. Her team won the Virginia Knights of Columbus State Catholic High School Tournament Championship in Richmond, VA in the years 1960, 1961, and 1962. In 1962, she was selected as the Co-Captain of her team, was President of the Varsity Club, and was the “Most Athletic Girl” in the Class of 1962 Hall of Fame.

In the early 90s, Jackie played on a senior Olympics Basketball Team, the “C-Gals,” composed of women who had played basketball at NCHS. They won the State Championship for several years, often beating men’s basketball teams, gaining an invitation to play for the national championship. Jackie said, “We owe our championships to our coach Angie Fitzpatrick. Mrs. Fitz taught us basketball and so much more!”

Since graduating, Jackie has been very supportive of Catholic High School. She has supported many CHS fundraising events and has donated to the Class of ’62 scholarship fund. She is a very active and integral member of the Class of ’62 reunion organizing committee, which are held every 5 years with mini-reunions in between. She also supports Catholic High School events with floral decorations by providing floral centerpieces and floral decorations from her business, Greenbrier Florist.

She is the owner of Greenbrier Florist and is a respected leader in the local floral industry, having held many different administrative offices. She was a leader in developing a local co-op floral delivery service with other local florists.

She has also been a community leader, actively participating in many different civic groups, business associations, sorority, holding offices in many of these groups. Jackie recently completed a 2-year position as President of the South Norfolk Federated Women’s Club.
