Zach Haney - BSCHS Class of 2004

Zach Haney ‘04 served as Windsor High School’s Vice Principal before being named Principal of Smithfield High School starting this fall.

What did you do after graduation?
Following four wonderful years at Bishop Sullivan, I attended Salisbury University (MD) to play baseball at the collegiate level. I graduated Honors with Distinction receiving dual degrees in English Literature and History as well as minors in both Sociology and German (Danke, Frau!). When I returned to Hampton Roads, I joined Suffolk City Schools and started my career in education teaching English and World Geography at John F. Kennedy Middle. I continued my studies at Old Dominion University earning an M.S.Ed. in Field Based Research with a Curriculum and Instruction concentration, and, later, an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Hampton University. After seven years in the classroom, I moved to Isle of Wight County Schools serving two years as an Assistant Principal at Westside Elementary and one year at Windsor High School. I have completed my course-work for my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at O.D.U., and next year, I will be the Principal of Smithfield High School

What clubs/activities were you in during high school?
As a Freshman, I played basketball and even had a role in the school’s musical. I participated in the German and French clubs and held leadership positions in both. I also pitched four years for the Varsity baseball team and with my coaches and teammates we advanced in the State tournament two of those years.

What are your favorite memories from Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School?
I entered my freshman year as a product of the public school system. The amazing teachers at Catholic began to ignite a new passion for learning and I started to enjoy coming to school. This feeling meant a lot as I had to travel over 30 minutes from Chesapeake to experience a quality education from amazing teachers, while socializing with memorable friends. It is truly a blessing to be a member of the Crusader family.

WHAT does being a Crusader mean to you?
An individual inspired through the teaching of Christ and a college preparatory education that resonates through my personal and professional life.
